Speaking Up With Confidence
Stay firm when they escalate or steamroll: restate your position once, calmly, and add nothing new.
Adding a new reason each time sounds like you're negotiating with yourself. Under real pressure, calm repetition beats a better argument.
Name the tactic to yourself, restate your position once, and hold. Same words, same calm, until it's the most obvious fact in the room. Add nothing new.
“I don't think you get how important this is.”
“We can't add this quarter without dropping something. What should come off?”
Jordan Blake, senior leader
“This is a priority. I need you to make it work like the other teams did.”
Hold your no. Acknowledge urgency, restate once, hand back the trade-off. Do not escalate.
