Speaking With Empathy
Land the difficult truth so it holds them up, not knocks them down.
Padding the news to be kind just buries it, and they walk away unsure what you actually said. Bluntness lands clean but leaves them alone with it. Care plus clarity plus a path is the only version that respects them.
Three moving parts, one sentence. The care makes it human, the news makes it clear, the path makes it survivable.
show you see the weight “I know how much this mattered to you.”
the clear truth, no hedging “The role's going to Sara, not you.”
a way forward, together “Let's map what gets you there next round.”
“So did the promotion come through? I've been waiting all week to hear.”
“I know how badly you wanted this. It's not happening this cycle, the panel went with Devin. I want to sit down and build the case that makes it obvious next time.”
Owen Frey, direct report
“Did we get the green light on the pilot? I already told my team we're a go.”
Care, clear news, path forward. Three parts, one line. Don't soften the news into a maybe.
A strong answer: “I know you were counting on this, and I hate being the one to say it. Leadership passed on the pilot for now. Let's figure out what would flip that call next quarter.”

Care, clear news, path. The hard thing, said so it holds them up.
This is one lesson from the Speaking With Empathy course in the Insight7 app, with a roleplay to rehearse the real conversation.
